Old and New Songs

I've been listening to old songs recently and had this thought on comparing it with the songs of today.

I feel relaxed and nostalgic everytime I hear the old ones. It makes my mind think and reflect on any things I can wonder of.

It makes me peaceful and recall good memories.

On the other hand, the new songs are not bad because some of the songs are equal to old songs.

In fact, there are many contemporary songs that are in my playlist.

Sometimes, I threw different moods that at times I love listening to the oldies, while other times I prefer the newer ones.

When I'm driving, I love listening to the radio and tune in to stations playing oldies. It makes me focus and clear my thoughts.

When I travel, I love listening to new songs. It pumps my adrenaline. But if I'm in the plane, I prefer listening to oldies.

Now, I'm thinking on the lyrics.

In old songs, the lyrics are so natural which gives clarity and peace in its meaning. The new ones are very rapid, the lyrics are repeating, rhythmic, and sometimes the meaning is hard to understand, but we listen and enjoy.

So its between lyrics and rhythm. Old songs are more soothing music and newer songs are more on the melody.

But a thought also for some of the new songs are revival from the old ones. Does it mean we love old lyrics except we tend to pump a little on the melody?

It's still the best to listen to the original. For others, they prefer listening to what's new for they wanted to be "in" with the trends.

Anyway, whether it's old or new, music is still music. Each songs has its own signature. Every song has its way to convey its meaning and its up to the listener to choose which one is best for them.

For me, I always go for the meaning of the lyrics and that's my way in liking a song regardless whether its old or new.

Not that I dispute.

I love chocolates and ice creams.

I love coffee and strawberries.

I love to travel.

I love adventures.

I love nature, fresh air and sunlight.

I love to explore new things.

I love reading books.

I love silence and ponder on deep thoughts.

I love to write, its my way of expressing myself.

I love to have a healthy discussion or just talk about anything.

I love to laugh.

I love to sing.

I love to sleep.

And Of course, there's always time for my friends, family and love ones.

Letting go doesn't mean giving up

Letting go is difficult. It is. However such is expected because you are giving up something that matters to you. It is like letting loose of something that has been a part of you and by doing such would somewhat cripple yourself. As if you are being stripped off or perhaps denied of the things you want. Scary indeed, yet its always been like that.

I remember one time, my mom used to tell me that "when something is lost, and you're having difficulty finding it, just simply stop looking, and eventually you will find it somewhere" I wonder if you experience this but it did on my part and not just once but several times. Of course, some of you won't agree on this and I fairly understand. When something is lost there's always a strong force urging us to search and won't stop until it is found. Exhausting all the time, effort and resources but what if you will never find it?

I'm not saying to give up easily. What I'm trying to say is to understand things as it is. Sometimes in life we lost someone or things, a broken relationship or failing on something that would surely be painful. It is normal and life is like that. Detaching ourselves on something we are used to is a difficult thing. It takes time and such is a struggle to oneself.

I'm not saying letting go is just a walk in a park. Of course it takes time and needs healing. But letting go does not mean giving up. It is being matured and accept things in life the way it has to be. It is about learning things that can't be. It is about hoping for more and not limiting yourself. It is abut love when someone puts others before himself.

I considered that night to be one of my memorable events in my life. For several reasons, 1) it was her birthday 2) exclusive to someone whom i love so dearly 3) dine at Cafe Elysa!

When you are in the outside, you really won't expect much because the place is old. In the inside, I felt the ambiance of a Hispanic house with all the old paintings, chairs, tables and antiques. But these are not much of a factor for me because I tell you guys the food is fantastic! =) highly recommended.

Rex's Kandingan sa SRP

I had a chance to eat @ Rex's Kandingan sa SRP last night and Indeed the Kaldereta taste really good! =).

Going to Talisay (via SRP), left side along the road, you can easily locate the eatery because it is usually jam packed with customers.

Sadly, I wasn't able to take pictures on our orders, but I can recall they are offering (aside from Kaldereta) Paklai, Bam-e, Adobong Baboy, and Nilarang. However, based on the billboard, I'm sure they are offering more.

For those hardcore Kalderetang Kambing lovers, I highly recommend this place. On the other hand, you are also helping because the eatery is actually helping the church scholars. In fact, some food servers from the organization.

Sometimes it made me think there’s no point worrying on the things I do and my surroundings. For then, still, you can’t be sure if everything will be all right thereafter. Things fail sometimes in spite of the worthy efforts we made. That’s how life is but then it doesn’t mean that we just be complacent and do nothing at all. Everyday is a challenge to all of us. No matter how hard, painful, and difficult still all these are given facts of life. So heads up and stay cool for everyday is a brand new day for hope.

I recently had a chance to visit Enchanted Kingdom last week and it was fun!. I have here few tips when you want to visit the place. =)

1. Water container - it is advisable to bring your own water and put it in a container, unless of course, if its OK with you, to keep on buying bottled water inside. You are not allowed to bring food and water in the place. For others, the brand label was strip off their bottles and was allowed to bring it inside.

2. Extra shirt - aside from sweat (eww!), there are some rides that will make you wet so better have an extra shirt.

3. Face Towel - this will come handy specially if you are falling in line under the heat of the sun and sweat coming out all over your face. You will definitely needing this one =).

4. Cap - you wont be enjoying inside when it rains right? So bring yourself a cap for your protection under the heat while roaming around the place.

5. Back pack - as a safety for you personal belongings like wallets, cellphones, and etc. place it inside your back pack or any small bag for your convenience when roaming around the area.

6. Food - there are a lot of food stalls inside so better bring money and buy inside. You are not allowed to bring food anyway. =)

The name "Green and Purple" was derived from the fave colors of Jeff and Sandy. Green is Jeff's color and Purple is for Sandy. When Jeff was in Singapore, while riding a bus, he thought of name for their photography business that would reflect both of them. So there comes the name "Green and Purple". =)

It’s been my daily routine to have a cup of coffee. In the office, before I start my work, I prepare myself a cup of coffee to accompany and charge me all day. I simply love coffee and its part of my daily grind. On the other hand, I notice something that I’ve been using almost the same cup everyday. What made me thought about it was the crack on the lid part visible to the one using it. Even so, I can’t remember any leak when I used it. The cup still proves to be useful in spite of its defect.

I thought for a moment and made me reflect when it comes to us individuals. We really can’t say that when someone messes up once doesn’t mean that within time they can’t find a way to change for the better. It doesn’t mean also that when someone who had not make a mistake, for sure, will never and ever make mistakes. We really can’t tell nor judge others just because of certain situation or dilemma. It’s difficult to comment on people especially if we failed to assess first ourselves. We may fall but still each one of us has its own purpose in life.

I had a lot of mistakes but the good thing is that I learned from it. I’m a work in progress. I believe we all are.

What is Love?

What is love?

One of the most difficult questions and for centuries, mankind is baffled on its existence. Time passed and so is Love since the very beginning of mankind it is everywhere and part of life. Others would say, “Love is something that you don’t need to define nor understand; it’s something you need to feel”. For some, “It is an emotion of strong affection, of attachment”. In the context of Philosophy, love is a virtue expressing human kindness and compassion. A lot of definitions and interpretations in which relatively means it is something that one would define by himself as he journey towards life.

Love is complicated and crazy as generally said. Perplexing as it is, that no one can give a good definition of it till now. Depending on the context, the meaning could have a lot of variations. Platonic Love, Filial Love, Familial Love, Romantic Love and so on, each has its own meaning and purpose. The meaning will change depending on the situation, relationship, and profundity.

So goes with 1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” Will this biblical definition qualify as real Love?

One time, a good friend of mine told me “Love never fails”. Coming from the perspective that it is patient and must endure through the test of time, but how come, a lot of broken relationships happen? There’s hate in the relationship, between friends, siblings, parents, children, rivalry, and failed marriages. Does it mean they are into something that is not true Love? Or they simply had forgotten the true meaning of love?

At times we question if Love really does exist. Is there really Love? Or it’s just a state of mind? While logic would say it is false but then the heart would say it is true. It’s a mind-boggling phenomenon.

Let us take for example on getting married. Both partners entered into a big unknown realm because and for only reason they love each other. It’s like a gamble, unknowingly what might happen and what the future will hold. One must let go of a big outlay whether financial, emotional, patience, time, sacrifice, and things that one can’t even visualize until such one begins his battle. It’s like entering into a gladiator arena wherein one must win or die and succeed beating all opponents and prevail over the unthinkable roaring lions with only sword or spear in hand.

Talking about real life scenario, a sword would mean “guts” and the opponents would mean limitless things like in-laws, kids, financial issues, career, vices, sex, beliefs, religion, jealousy, etc.

A different standpoint when it comes to a love affair, which is totally different compared to marriage. A love affair has its own mechanics. Generally speaking, such relationship is not meant to last. It started with an excitement to be with each other however such is temporary. It’s like a creek that disappears in the middle of summer. Both individuals are riding on an overwhelming state of what seems like love, pushing through, until such the joyride is over.

Although sex can be as beautiful as ever, and would spark up a relationship, but still not enough to cover all the needed elements of a lasting relationship. Sex is not love but it is essential to a relationship.

Recently, while I wander inside the mall, I saw an old couple sweetly holding their hands. It made me realize that someone can Love you forever and there is that kind of love that is lasting. At their age, I’m sure they’ve been through a lot of ups and downs of life and amazingly stood up the test of time. They must have the love that is more than enough to willingly sacrifice and endure pains. I can’t imagine the share of sorrows, joy, understanding and giving space for quiet a long period of time then it must have been their commitment to each other and acceptance to one’s fault.

Love is best seen in commitment and action not just emotion. For in time, such emotions will be tested and if not strong enough will surely topple. It is when one is devoted to someone that results to a long-term successful relationship, not just a short journey.

I’ve been jumping from different situations and scenario and each has its own explanation of love. There is no exact or correct definition. In the world we live in, we made love out to be mystifying, immeasurable, and indefinable. We are given the idea that if we define love, it will result to a less powerful and invigorating concept or maybe we simply love the mystery of it.

CEBU, Philippines – The 3-day Aviation Expo 2009 was formally lunched by Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) last December 18, 2009. The activity was attended by DOTC Sec. Leandro Mendoza, CAAP Director General Ruben Ciron and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

According to MCIAA CEO and General Manager Danilo Francia, this activity was the first ever done in Cebu. The said activity was intended to make the public know the existence of the aviation facilities they could use through the different Aeronautical Schools in Mactan.

The lone government aviation school – Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PHILSCA) that offers various aeronautical courses has 5 school branches in the Philippines.

PAF 2^nd Air Division Commander Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Legaspi show the fleet of war planes such as SF-260 Turbo Prop (Warrior II), MD 520 MG (Defender) chopper, UH1N1 Huey helicopter, C-130, Nomad plane and other facilities for Search and Rescue team of 505^th PAF in Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base (MBEAB).

Mendoza and Ciron commented on the activity by stating that we are on the aviation era and people should know the facilities and the importance of the aviation whether private or military.

The activity was also celebrated during the MCIAA anniversary.

Francia was very thankful to the owners of the private planes who supported the activity such as Capt. Joseph Bajenting, Indiana Aerospace University ni Dr.Juvy Toring, Cheynair Avaition ni Cessna Zosa Sarmiento and PHILSCA – MBEAB through the Campus director Dr. Nonadel Alvarado Soriano by showing their private planes on the expo.

The 3-day Expo was free of charge and open to the public. The exhibit was placed at the MIP office at the back of MCIAA.

I recently convert one of my extra rooms as my kid's room in order for them to have their privacy. As you already know, when kids get older, they start to demand a lot of things. As part of growing up, it would be best to let them do their own things but of course with supervision. Sometimes you need them be on their own to practice independence and getting rid of that attitude of always depending on us parents. So, i pimp few things here such as posters, beddings, comforter, decks, paints & etc to make lovely for kids.

We just had our team bonding last November 27 & 28 @ Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort. It was support to be in Alegre but opted for a new place because we already had it there before last 2007. The place was very nice and best suited if you want to rejuvenate, enjoy, relax, disconnect from the hussles and bustles of your daily grind.

This is the Watepark. The green tube is for the kids not that steep compared to the red/white for adults. If you love adrenaline rush you should try the elevated one cool!

Waterpark for kids. It's not clear in the picture but that's a pail on top and it will tilt once full with water, creating a splashing effect.

I had fun bonding with my kids last Sunday @ Playmaze Parkmall Mandaue. They've been asking for this for a while that I made a decision to give it to them. The last time we entered a playhouse was in Vivo Crown Regency and its been a while also.

First, your kids are required to wear their long sleeve and socks for safety. There are new things here like the...hmm.. I really don't the right term for this but a air blower where kids can put balls and make it float on top of it. It's cool!

Of course, my kid's favorite - Air gun. You can load soft rubber balls and fire it out. It's really fun that I played also with the kids.

And this one, you need to fill this cage by putting the balls at the bottom and the tube will suck pulling it up and on the cage (see pic) and when you're ready to let it all fall, you will put the lever and the cage will tilt and pour all the balls and kids loves to rumble and scramble into it. crazy huh but fun!

We really had great time and looking forward on playing here again.

I let my eldest ZYxel decide on what they wanted which made us went to Parkmall and instead of going to PlayMaze these kids were enticed with the drag race exhibition which consumed almost all of our time aside from having our lunch at the place.

I had a chance to be in front of the STEC Grade 1 kids last July 10, 2009. I was given a task to speak on general concept about Nutrition. Though it was a short notice, I was able to prepare few slides and videos for them. I've learned a lot of things here, 1) Kids are visual - they will enjoy if you have something for them to see and visualize 2) Let them participate - this will get their attention and will make them involve in the activity 3) Kids can easily be bored - find new ways to let them stay awake and alive during the activity.
I don't want kids to be stiff that at the beginning of the talk that I had to get their attention, motivate, and had them shout!!! to make the awake =)

My friend Joevia who is now in Michigan US sent me these great pictures of Tulips from her very own backyard. She's the one who planted these 3 years ago and delighted to see these bloom every coming spring. Sad to say, the flowers last only for 2 weeks the most. A Tulip bulb is planted normally from 4-6 inches deep depending on the kind of soil. They do best in climates with cool temperature. Thanks Joe for the wonderful pictures.

I am such a lousy UPean. If my friend Charito who is an alumnae of UP Cebu didn’t told me and gave me this 100-piso bill once we had chitchat in the office then I wouldn’t have known this.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas issued around 10,000 sets (based on data gathered) of 100-piso banknotes overprinted with the image of UP Oblation. This is to commemorate the Centennial of the University of the Philippines (UP) 1908 - 2008. The Oblation is the symbol of UP, represented by a man with arms wide-stretched and face facing up, symbolizing selfless offering of one’s self to his country.

The UP Oblation overprinted on the watermark space to the right of President Manuel Roxas' portrait, symbolizes 100 years of "academic excellence, leadership and service to the nation" by "one of the most influential institutions" in the Philippines that is UP.

My friend had two of this still crispy which she got from the bank so I begged her to have one of it in exchange of unprinted one. From what I know, some collectors are selling a single bill up around 500 to 1,000 pesos each and selling like pancakes. I know the price maybe too much but not for the true blooded UPean.

Trick of Treat Party 08

My son Zyxel had their Trick or Treat party last October 24 at school. At first, he wants to have the spiderman costume but later on decided on Harry Potter knowing a lot of his classmates opted for mister spidy. I'm also glad that he chose such for it's quiet unique and cool costume. It reminds me of Oxford University where students wear gowns inside the classrooms. However, I had difficulty finding the costume for the movie's last episode was released last year. If i'm not mistaken, July next year will be the release of Harry Potter 's book 6, so by that time, i'm sure a lot of various potter costumes will be made available in the market.

At a price of 300 Php, you can have an 8 laps of adrenaline rush and be a speed devil at Kart Zone back of Sykes building Panagdait Mabolo. Our team had our bonding last August 23 and decided to make different and be maniac in a race track. Unfortunately, considering its my first time, I ended up last. Nevertheless, I've learned few tricks in kart racing. Maybe I'll do better next time.

1.) Have the right posture - sit up straight, keep your head up so that you can clearly view the track.

2.) Apply less brakes - Acceleration is key to winning. Apply just less brakes specially around a corner. At first, you're afraid that your kart will roll over when making full sharp swing but it wont. The rear part of the kart will just slide in the corner still making a full speed. Karting drivers calls it 'trail braking'. This needs a lot of practice.

3.) Make a move, Overtake and intimidate - bumping and rubbing other kart is definitely not allowed. So make a way to sort of block others and if he attempts to make a brake then blast off.

Archeology & Boljoon Parish Museum

I had a chance to revisit Boljoon last June 21, 2008 for it was the death anniversary of my mother-in-law. It's actually an old catholic tradition to celebrate such occasion after a year from the date of the passing. In Bisaya, they called it 'katapusang panga-gi' (last mourning prayer).

Part of my itinerary was also to visit the archaeological site where they uncovered the 15th century 'bisayan' - old settlers of Boljoon and artifacts. Unfortunately, the dig site was no longer there. I've learned from one the villagers that few months after my last visit, the archeology team already put an end on their excavation. Nevertheless, I took the picture of what I failed to post in my previous blog - an illustration of Bisayans in the Boxer Codex 1595.

Boxer Codex is a manuscript written circa 1595 which contains illustrations or drawings of Filipinos at the time of their initial contact with the Spanish. So we can now imagine how the native bisayans looks like during their time. With this, we can also visualize how Datu Lapu-lapu (1521 Battle of Mactan) dress up during his reign.

This time, I had a chance to explore the Boljoon Parish Museum located just inside of the church building. But before that, allow me first to illustrate on where is Boljoon for a lot of my friends are asking where it is. The town of Boljoon is located in Cebu and next to Alcoy (see image below). Boljoon is one of the oldest towns of Cebu. It was said to be an early settlement of the Malay migrants and where textile trading with Chinese exist even before the Spanish colonization. This will later on explain based on what I've discovered inside the Museum.

Please take note that these pictures were taken with the consent of the museum curator. There were actually a lot of interesting items inside but I don't have full authority to take pictures due to security reasons. I only had very very few that I can share with you. In fact, I was allowed to take pictures for the reason of making it as an awareness to all who are willing to explore the true historical treasures of Boljoon. Please do visit and I'll assure you'll learn a lot.

17th century old Church Doctrines/Records

On my left side cased in glass are all 17th century Boljoon church doctrines/parish records. Most of it were in manuscript and written in Spanish. I really wanted to take a macro picture of the page where I was really amazed for every page was written uniformly similar to a Bickham Script font you'll find in your word processing software. I wonder how many months would it take for a calligrapher to write just one book.

17th /18th century Baptismal records

Boljoon Church is the only one in town that has complete parishioner records from 17th century up to present. According to the museum curator, most of the church members (specially women) during 17th-18th centuries were tailors or engaged in textile business. This explains the skills that was handed over from bisayans to the next generation of villagers. If you remember, Boljoon was used to be a trading center for textiles.

Gold Plated Thread Vestment

This 17th century old church vestment was woven using gold plated thread. The intricate design explains the great tailoring skills of Boljoanons during that time.

Portopaz & Vinajeras

On the left side (Portopaz) is made of plated metal and marble basement. This one was used to passed among the members of the congregation to be kissed when the priest bestows the peace of Christ - an old church practice during the Spanish times.

On the right Vinajeras (spanish term for small glass jar) was used as wine and water container for the mass. Priest nowadays still uses containers for wine/water but not anymore this kind. The style of using caja or kaban (small box) to preserve the item was an old practice during 18th century.

Rueda

Rueda (roller wheel) was used to produce continuous bell rings during Liturgy of the Eucharist. The frame was made of molave or tugas wood which explains its sturdy built and bronze metal for the bells. I guess some churches or priests are still using bells but not anymore this kind.

Old Memories

I had a chance to visit the province of Southern Leyte last week because of my cousin's wedding invitation. It's been a while since my last visit and I noticed a lot of changes in the place. I can't get rid of the beautiful old memories I once have here that I took pictures for my blog entry.

Zamora Street

The picture shows the corner of Zamora Street, Sogod Southern Leyte. The old house in corner was used to be the home of my Lolo and Lola way back years ago. We used to visit here every summer when I was still in my elementary. But when they passed away, the siblings decided to have this place rented. The last time I saw this place was three years ago and was rented by an ukay-ukay (surplus garments) vendor. But now, the place was divided into portions and occupied by barbeque station, Internet Cafe and Fashion accessories store.

Bus Terminal

The bus terminal was used to be a muddy place specially during rainy season. I can still remember back when we were bound home and need a bus ride. The mud will stick to your shoe sole bringing it all the way to Cebu. But now, the roads are fully asphalted and the nearby business establishments are cemented. You will no longer have problems even if you wear sandals or slippers. c",)

The 60's Photos

I took this picture inside my aunt's house who kept these old 60's photos as her keepsake. These were previously placed on the living room walls of the old house (corner of Zamora St.) but were later on transferred when they decided to have the place rented. On the left side was the family picture of my mom and on the rights side was my grand pa's pic with his siblings. This purely black and white shade remembers me of an old classic movie.

Playground

This road is an extension of the main Zamora Street which is nearby the old house. This place was used to be our playground when we were still kids. This is where we play patintero, bato-lata, tago-an and all those kids play stuff happened here. But later on, a telecom company purchased the area making it their Southern Leyte branch. The area is now a commercial establishment.

Rice field

In just a few minutes bike ride from Sogod going south, you will see the vast ricefields. Farming is also an important source of livelihood here in the Leyte considering the massive agricutural land area. This is where we go when we got tired of doing the usual and wants to feel the breeze of fresh air. I really loved this place.

My Science Teacher

I happen to pass by and look around the school where I used to go when I was in my elementary. And I noticed that a lot was changed. As if the school was totally remodeled. It’s been a while since my last visit and I can no longer differentiate between what it was before and now. Yet, this place reminds me of the memories and life’s lesson from someone who has always been a part of me.

She was Ma’am M. I truly admired the dedication and perseverance she showed in her work. I can still recall the last time I saw her in cleanly pressed uniform as she confidently strides back and forth in front of the class doing the lecture. She explains every lesson with eloquence and conviction as a sign of mastery and experience. Also, she patiently repeats and simplifies her explanation to those who didn’t understand the first time around, making sure all her students got it right. One time, I came by the school early in the morning. I thought I was the only one in school so I readily rush my way inside room making noise then I saw her seriously doing her lesson plan. Thinking of avoiding reprimand, I promptly greeted her “Good morning ma’am!” then she replied “Good morning” as she continues writing her lesson plan book. I quickly placed my things on my desk and was about to go out when I heard her saying “Were going to have a short exam later, I expect you’ve studied your science lessons”. I replied by nodding my head though I wasn’t really prepared which eventually got a low score on that. She was very fond of having pop quizzes. That’s her way of making her students always prepared while learning self-discipline. She was indeed a remarkable teacher and we appreciated her for that.

Another trait I liked about Ma’am M was her good relationship to her students. She wasn’t like other teachers who gain respect by enforcing tensions and hard punishments. She has this technique of making everyone in the class listen even though how boring the subject matter was. I recall one time when our class got unruly; she then started telling stories and share her personal experience in the class were we interestingly lend our ears. At that moment, I’ve learned that her passion for teaching made her decide to take up a degree in education during her college. She graduated with honors and became one of the top students of Carolinian class ‘63. She was proud and confident sharing those stories implying us to do the same effort and value the learning we had. All the wisdom she gave to us has always been inspiring, making her different from others.

Days passed and Ma’am M got sick with a serious heart ailment. She was no longer the lively and chatty teacher I knew. Her lectures were not the same old driven with eagerness and confidence. Those inspiring stories she used to include every end of our science class were not anymore in her routine. Her condition grew steadily worst few days after. She was admitted to the hospital and was given 24 hours watch. Visitors were allowed but with limited time so our class came by to have a quick visit. She was there lying in her bed smiling as she saw us entering the room. She was happy to see her students and hear their cheerful greetings. We narrated happy moments during those times we missed her presence. As we settle, Ma’am M started to utter her inspiring thoughts that we haven’t heard for a while, unaware that those were the last time we’re going hear those imparted wisdom. Ma’am M passed away the day after and we are all saddened by her demise. But no matter how we tried to console ourselves, her death was inevitable.

Those memories had been a while but the lessons and wisdom I’ve learned from her are still fresh in my mind. She taught me on how to show dedication to things I’m bound to but she also taught me on how to love the things I do. She taught on how to persevere and continue despite the difficulties but she also taught me on how to learn from my mistakes. She taught me discipline and how to influence other people but she also taught me the value of a relationship. All of these made me a better person and I am very much grateful for the person who left this mark on me.

Archaeology in Boljoon

April 4 & 5 is the feast of Arbor, Boljoon - the hometown of my wife. Every time this event comes, we visit their place to celebrate and get along with the relatives.

My wife and I decided to go straight to poblacion church and just go back to Arbor. The church was closed when we arrived so we spent few minutes rest at church shade.

We noticed some posters and tents on the right side. For all we know, there's an ongoing archaeological excavation of the plaza fronting the church.

The 'Bisayans' (early settlers of Boljoon during pre-hispanic period) was believed to bury their dead underneath their houses.

Into Photography (Part2)

The last time I wrote about photography was about the works and master pieces of my friends at work. This time, its going to be my very own accomplishments.

I got my Canon 710 IS buddy few months after i wrote that article. I was really enticed with the pictures they took that made me decide to have my own. The 710 IS is a good companion for those starters for it has all the basic functionalities of a pro camera.

According to my grandpa, who was a pro during his time, he told me that "photography is an art and what matters in it is how you compose your picture". Yes I very much agree with his thoughts. No matter how good the gadget, everything will be worthless if the shots are poorly taken.

A friend of mine also told me that if you look at a picture, and if that tells stories, then its good composition.

I took some shots and tried those tips and tricks I've learn from them.

I thought of doing the basics and tried the still macro shots on flowers.

My first shot was a gumamela which I took along the roadside a walks away from home. In this pic, I would like to emphasize simplicy and beauty of the subject.

I took this shot in a nearby guitar store in Lapu-lapu. I'm having problem taking this shot because the store was a bit dim. I made minor adjustments on my shot to balance lighting. Here I'm emphasizing the intricacies and beauty of classic guitars.

This one I took inside a mall. Actually a difficult one because the place was dark and I have to use my flash and balance everything to get a good picture. It took me 10 shots before I got this one.

Christmas Sing-In : The Gunter Kallmann Choir

During my childhood days, a neighbor of ours right next to our house loves the 'Christmas Sing-In album' of The Gunter Kallmann Choir. I can still remember the time, it was @ 6am and 6pm that their phonograph starts playing aloud. Well, nobody from the neighborhood complained for it was nice to hear and will truly get you in the mood for the season. I am not sure but from what I've heard, they're now in Canada and been their for good.

I also reminisce my high school days when our choir bagged the 1st prize performing our own
a-cappella version of 'The Little Drummer Boy' (inspired by the Gunter Kallmann version). It was a very tough one specially we are competing with other schools. We are very confident on that considering our mentor who was a music professor and we've been practicing it for almost 4 months. c",)

Oh my gosh! I stumble upon this good site. I've been looking for an mp3 of this music for quiet some time. A friend lend me a casette and have my own recorded copy. I already forgot where I placed it and if even if I have it now, I no longer have a cassette player. I know I know.. this album is much older that I am. The album was released by Polydor records wayback 1971. I tried shopping around record stores and I can no longer find one. The images I posted above was the original front and back cover of the LP album (Long playing record). Yep I can still remember the images the same with our neighbor.

Just this morning, I received my Ubuntu 7.04 CD installer for PC all the way from Netherland (for free!). For those who are not familiar with Ubuntu, it's a community-developed linux based operating system (OS - such as Windows) perfect for your laptop, desktop and servers. It contains almost all your need to work on such as a web-browser, presentation, document and spreedsheet, instant messenger and a lot more. And the best part of it is that Ubuntu is a FREE software. All you have to do is download or request for an installer copy in their website.

Google, best place to work

It was Friday and a lazy day at the office. We sat down, talked and laughed about just anything that came into our in mind. There was one topic that was intriguingly discussed by the group and that was about 'finding the best workplace'. I used the term intriguing because it was timely when one of our colleagues was contacted by a company and offered him a good offer. But in spite, I believe, he has reservation in accepting the offer especially when it deals with being far from you family and love ones. Sometimes it's not just about money that makes a person happy but also some intangible aspects that are hard to explain.

The discussion turned out to be healthy. We were loud, open-minded and never cared if the topic was a taboo. The high IT workforce turnover had always been a dilemma which made it more acceptable now to the group. Everybody had its own insights and ideas as to what a good job and employer have to be. Well I guess it depends on the person's way of life and status that would trigger which one is best for him or her.

In the middle of the conversation, a colleague Jao showed us a video posted on YouTube. It was about Fortune magazine's best company to work for and Google ranked first. I watch the whole video and there's only thing I could say, its way COOL!

Into Photography

Most of my friends now are into photography. Some just recently purchased hi-tech costly gadgets, took shots and started posting masterpieces in their Flicker accounts. I'm kind of proud of them knowing they've got a lot of good comments from not just Pinoys but foreign photographers as well. It's an acknowledgment for them who haven't been to rigid photography training or school but earned good impression from professionals.

My grandfather who happens to be a pro in his time once told me that photography is an art. It is not just merely taking pictures to record an event, but most importantly, it's how you compose that allows it to convey messages and emotions through that image that you shoot. It's like experiencing the viewer as if they were on that same event or communicates with them in some way by just looking at the picture. And that's the hardest part of being a photographer according to my grandpa. It however takes time and patience to muster the skills you need to be a good photographer.

It actually came into my mind of having my own set but due to some priorities, I'll have to set it aside for now. But anyway, let me share you some good photos from friends that would explain what my grandpa meant.

Below was titled Beach Ballet from a friend Jeff Garban. Looking at this makes me think of fun, enjoyment and looks like a health advertisement - great capture !

Another one, Beach Beauty from friend Angelo Panares. By merely looking at it, I can feel the breeze of the coast. Nice, clean and nature. Nice capture!

A better way in searching music files, videos and ebooks by using Google scripts

At first I find it very irritating every time I rummage into mp3 songs using search engines. Sometimes I got lucky and downloaded a few but most of the time ends up futile. Almost all my efforts are wasted on websites claiming to have free downloadable but when you click on the link "Download for Free!" it prompts for an online payment. Arghh!

Some are using freewares that can be easily be downloaded in the Internet but you need to install it and must be proficient enough to know its tweak and functions. So instead, I'm looking of a simpler way of doing it considering the hassle.

One time, while searching some techie stuff, I unintentionally browsed an article about a script that you can easily use in Google search engine. It's actually a set of operators used for advance searching and as explained in the Google help center, this script will restrict search results to individual files. So instead of bringing you to websites, this will list the exact documents matched by your search.

By then using this script makes everything easy and fun. Here's how you gonna do it. Below is a sample script we are going to use for searching mp3 files.

The script portion (wma|mp3) stands for the filename extension we're going to search. So in our case, we are going to search for wma - windows media audio and mp3 - mpeg audio layer 3. On the segment "Westlife%" stands for name of the file we are going to retrieve. The % means any strings or characters. So to sum up, we are looking for a wma or mp3 file that starts with Westlife followed by any characters.

After figuring that out all you have to do is copy the script and place it in the Google engine then click search.

Google will list down exact matches on the query you performed. Now click any index link to display the file list.

And lastly, click on the file you want to download. A dialog box will prompt to confirm downloading.

Amazing isn't it? I hope this will help lighten up your Google search. Here are some predefined scripts you can use in case you want to search for movies or ebooks. Just change the filename portion depending on your requirement.

Island-Hopping Escapade

Last March 3, 2007, the CSD Team agreed on having an island-hopping escapade. Its been a while since our group had a day out that it did not take us a long time to decide. However, there were a lot of suggestions that were considered before arriving at the final decision. Some colleagues want to go to Moalboal; others prefer Malapascua while the rest wants to experience Badian. All suggestions were wonderful but due to time constraint, we opted for a shorter trip yet adventurous and worth seeing.

We planned to have it somewhere in southern part of Olango Island because it’s closer and accessible through Mactan beaches. Also, no one in the group had been to Hilutungan Marine Sanctuary, which is now the favorite attraction of mostly tourist. There are several islets in the area such as Nalusuan, Kaohagan, Cabul-an, Pandanon but we simply based our route on nearby island we could reach. We purposely omit the itinerary to add fun and trill as we travel.

Our rendezvous was the wharf just beside Parker beach. I can sense eagerness and excitement in the group because everyone arrived early. We brought along food just enough for a group of eight but we made it sure that it wouldn’t spoil our trip by bringing luscious foods such as lechon (roast pig), lambay (steamed crabs), pasayan (steamed shrimp) and of course chicherya (junk foods).We’ve waited few minutes for our rented bangca (outrigger canoe) to dock along the wharf. Thereafter, we loaded our stuffs and get ready to go.

Our first destination was Hilutungan Island - where marine sanctuary is located. It only took us 30 minutes to reach the place due to good sea condition. When we arrived at the vicinity, all eyes are set to the serene and undisturbed refuge. Though we’re not allowed to cross the border, we can still view and appreciate the beauty at a distance. About five-meter deep, colorful fishes swirling the corals can be clearly seen. We can’t resist the lure that we right away splash indulging ourselves in the cold seawaters. And for the nature lover, they used diving masks and snorkels to observe the underwater attraction. It was indeed a fun experience.

I got curious that I asked the guy who drive our banca for some historical facts about the place. He told me that the sanctuary is under the jurisdiction of Cordova Municipality (southern part of Mactan belonging to Cebu province) and was established by an ordinance way back 1991. The objective was to promote and manage the resources but was left unattended a few years after. Then on 1996, a new agreement was passed with the help of DENR-USAID Coastal Resource Management Project (CRMP) to mainstream the supervision and control. It became very effective that they expanded few hectares covering new sanctuary shorelines.

It’s nice to know that our government sectors are doing well in their job. Kudos to Cordova Municipality and DENR!

As we pack our things and get ready for lunch, a fleet of banca arrived and circled the sanctuary borderline. Most of them are Koreans who seemed very excited and attracted to the place. We then sailed a few meters nearing the island to come ashore.

Everybody was very hungry that we forgot to wash our hands. After saying grace, all rumbled into their favorite lechon, alimango and pasayan. What made it more appetizing was the suka pinakurat (vinegar with grind pepper). It does boost your desire for food by getting rid of the fatty grease in your tongue. And with the delightful ambiance brought by the gentle breeze everything was perfect!

After lunch, we had few minutes break to relax and get acquainted to the place. The restaurant was designed to highlight the beauty of nature. It’s a bungalow type made from nipa hut, bamboo and coconut poles. The adornments are mostly shells, fishes and other sea creatures hanged on pillars. The place was nice and they serve delicious food as well. On one corner was a kiosk selling fashion accessories made from natural shell components and marine products. Before we left the place, the group had a photo session on the lobby to serve as our souvenir. Others took also their personal shots with their cameras.

Our next trip was bound for Nalusuan. The island is located on the southern side of Hilutungan. It was low tide and we slow down a bit avoiding shallow seas to prevent the banca motor propeller from dragging the reef. As we turn right proceeding straight to Nalusuan, we noticed the view of the Hilutugan villagers living near the shoreline. On the rear side is the Island and Sun beach resort, which was known for its verandah rooms that seems to be floating on sea from a distance. I took a photo of it about 50 meters from the banca while cruising.

As we near the islet, one of the crews gestured that we couldn’t go closer due to shallow waters. Without second thought, the group quickly went down and frolicked into the pristinely clear waters and white sand.

Others can’t resist that they again suited up their swimming gears and plunged. I think this place is also great for kids considering the wide protected area and low sea level. We took a lot of photos especially on the panoramic view facing the islet. One of my colleagues even took videos of the surroundings for he is planning to show it to his relative from abroad. We really enjoyed the beauty and the serene marine life. This place is truly a nature’s gift.

We’re all exhausted. We want to proceed to Pandanon Island but the group agreed to call it a day. We then sailed directly to Opon and headed to our respective routes back home. Though we didn’t consume the whole day, it was quiet a satisfying journey. Not just to unwind from stress brought by city life, but more importantly, to see and discover new places that are untouched and proudly seen in the Philippines.

We're planning for another outing hopefully this mid-year. It's another adventurous trip that we look forward.
